Scarlet Lane has three other taprooms in the Indianapolis area (See the beerblogIN post on the Scarlet Lane Gastropub), is a woman owned business, and their CEO, Eilise Lane, is also their head brewer.

While there, Hoppy enjoyed the Tiberius West Coast DIPA at 8% ABV, 100IBU.

SCARLET LANE GASTROPUB

SCARLET LANE GASTROPUB

Last Saturday Hoppy visited the horror themed Scarlet Lane Gastropub on Bellefontaine St. in Indy. This was just after the Dorian Days and Dorian Stout Variants were still available. Hoppy partook of the following:

Dorian Millionaire Stout – w/ Sea Salt & Caramel 6% ABV 35 IBU

Double Dorian Stout – 10% ABV 20 IBU

Olga Imperial Stout – Strong Stout w/ Toffee & Chocolate Notes 11% ABV 25 IBU

He enjoyed them all, with his fave being the Olga!

Having also eaten here previously, Hoppy has a question for Executive Chef Erin Kem. When and where will you be bringing back your delicious Thai Mussels?

GUGGMAN HAUS BREWING TAPROOM – INDIANAPOLIS

On Saturday Hoppy visited two brewery taprooms and one brewery. His first visit was at the newly opened taproom of Guggman Haus in the SoBro district. This is in a space that was formerly occupied by Scarlet Lane Brewing.

While there Hoppy sampled an Into the Wild Sour: Raspberry and Lemon Berliner Weisse – Brewed with raspberry and lemon with an addition of fresh vanilla beans. Described as a very tart and refreshing raspberry-forward rendition of a raspberry lemonade. A wild yeast strain provided natural souring and milk sugars and oats help create a creamy body for this bright sour. 7% ABV.

He also drank an Orange and Pink Guava Kettle Sour Berliner Weiss – This is built on a base of Golden Promise and chit malt and described as having a delicious tart balance of sweet orange and guava with hints of pear and vanilla and a refreshing citrus finish. 7.5% ABV.

BLACK ACRE BREWING’S FINAL DAY – INDIANAPOLIS

BLACK ACRE BREWING’S FINAL DAY – INDIANAPOLIS

Another sad day for a decade’s old brewery in Indianapolis. Today not only marks the closing of Black Acre Brewing, but also their 11th anniversary celebration.

They began as a small three-barrel brew system at their taproom in the Irvington area, and eventually expanded to a 15bbl brew system in an offsite production facility on Bonna Avenue. They suffered setbacks including a fire at their taproom in December,2019, COVID-19, and its devasting effect on business, and most recently, pipes bursting at Black Acre’s production facility which damaged their reverse osmosis water filtration system. This has prevented them from brewing any more beer.

Should you be reading this today, and wish to attend, the closing/anniversary party, it will be continuing until midnight.

We wish the owners and their employees nothing but the best in their future endeavors!

Breaking News: Scarlet Lane Brewing will be taking over the taproom of Black Acre Brewing, in Irvington, in the near future. See video.

KISMETIC BEER COMPANY VISIT

KISMETIC BEER COMPANY VISIT

Hoppy visited Kismetic Beer on Saturday for the Race Into 201 Studios event. Like Scarlet Lane, Kismetic is a woman owned business with owner Nicole Oesch, who handles the front end of the business, collaborating with her husband Randy, who is the brewer. They are located in a 100+ year old building and their interior design is a retro chic 1970’s style.

While visiting, Hoppy had his first taste of a Cold IPA! No, a Cold IPA is not a refrigerated IPA, nor is it a form of Ice Beer popular in the 1990’s. A Cold IPA is described as a hybrid beer using lager yeast and pilsner malts brewed at higher temperatures than a traditional lager, with a large number of hops. Wayfinder Beer, out of Portland, Oregon, who made the first Cold IPA in October of 2018, describes it as follows: “Cold IPA hits with a strong punch of aromatic hop intensity and high bitterness but finishes crisp and clean leaving the drinker craving another sip. Itโ€™s Wester than West Coast.”

Hoppy enjoyed the Kismetic Cold IPA described as crisp and dry with aromas of pine and citrus, bitter and crisp on the palate. It is dry hopped at the end of fermentation to achieve fruit forward bio transformation. It clocked in at 6.4% ABV, 50 IBU.

A recent video on Kismetic Brewing can be found here.
