It is always sad when a craft brewery closes their doors, but in this case, it is especially so. Indiana City Brewing has had a decade long run and are located in a historic building that once housed the Home Brewing Company with roots back to 1891. (Their brands included Home Brew, Columbia, and Indiana ale and porter.)
Hoppy attended a taproom takeover send-off event last night, that was hosted by the Indy Beer Meetup Group, at the brewery. (If you are not already a member, you should consider joining the Indy Beer group!)
If you wish to visit Indiana City, they expect to be open and serving beer into next week. Please check their website or give them a call to make sure that they are open.
We wish the owner and the employees nothing but the best in their future endeavors!

Due to the scheduled demolition of their previous building, Union Brewing was forced to relocate to a new location in Carmel. Their reopening at the new location on Gradle Drive took place on January 18th. Hoppy visited them today.
They are currently only serving beers on guest taps, most of which are from Short’s Brewing in Bellaire, Michigan. Union Brewing recipe beers, made for them by Short’s, will be available soon.
While visiting, Hoppy drank a Short’s Huma Lupa Licious Imperial IPA. It is described as being big in every way that it can be: big on bitterness, big on malt backbone, big on piney waves of citrus and wildflowers. It clocks in at 7.7% ABV; 70 IBU.

Hoppy made a couple of visits to Christkindlmarkt in Carmel over the holiday season. It is described as a festive ambiance of an authentic German market, where guests can peruse a vast variety of products sourced from Germany and other German-speaking European countries. A blend of traditional German foods, drinks and gifts are sold from small wooden huts, and a beautiful outdoor ice-skating rink forms the center of the market. It was named the best holiday market in the U.S. in the USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards in 2019, 2021 and 2022! It also features the first Glühwein Pyramid of its type in the United States.
Also, you may purchase handmade steins made by Zöller & Born in Germany, that are only available at Carmel Christkindlmarkt. These include the City of Carmel, the State of Indiana, Indiana University, Purdue University and Butler University.
While there, Hoppy quaffed the following brews:
Christkindlmarkt from Bier Brewery in Indianapolis, made specially for Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt. It is a Dunkelweizen with orange peel and cocoa nibs. It is a dark wheat bier showcasing malts that display fruit characters reminiscent of plums, currants with toffee, and caramelized sugar notes. 5.5% ABV; 12 IBU.
Glühbier from Brouwerij Liefmans in Belgium. It is brewed with care for 6-12 months with real cherries in a barrel and described as full of cherry flavor and combined with fine spices such as cinnamon, clove and anise. Made exclusively for German Christmas markets, it is served hot. 6.5% ABV.
