Christkindlmarkt – Carmel

Christkindlmarkt – Carmel

Glรผhwein Pyramid – Also Serving Bier

Hoppy made a couple of visits to Christkindlmarkt in Carmel over the holiday season. It is described as a festive ambiance of an authentic German market, where guests can peruse a vast variety of products sourced from Germany and other German-speaking European countries. A blend of traditional German foods, drinks and gifts are sold from small wooden huts, and a beautiful outdoor ice-skating rink forms the center of the market.ย  It was named the best holiday market in the U.S. in the USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards in 2019, 2021 and 2022! It also features the first Glรผhwein Pyramid of its type in the United States.

Also, you may purchase handmade steins made by Zรถller & Born in Germany, that are only available at Carmel Christkindlmarkt. These include the City of Carmel, the State of Indiana, Indiana University, Purdue University and Butler University.

While there, Hoppy quaffed the following brews:

Christkindlmarkt from Bier Brewery in Indianapolis, made specially for Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt. It is a Dunkelweizen with orange peel and cocoa nibs. It is a dark wheat bier showcasing malts that display fruit characters reminiscent of plums, currants with toffee, and caramelized sugar notes. 5.5% ABV; 12 IBU.

Glรผhbier from Brouwerij Liefmans in Belgium. It is brewed with care for 6-12 months with real cherries in a barrel and described as full of cherry flavor and combined with fine spices such as cinnamon, clove and anise. Made exclusively for German Christmas markets, it is served hot. 6.5% ABV.

They brew up to 12 of their own beers at any time and offer dozens of other draft beers for guests to enjoy. The Flix pub is open seven days a week to the public, no movie ticket is required, so you can come in and grab a bite to eat or have a locally brewed beer anytime!

TOMLINSON TAP ROOM – INDIANAPOLIS

TOMLINSON TAP ROOM – INDIANAPOLIS

Hoppy recently visited the Tomlinson Tap Room at the historic Indianapolis City Market. It is run in partnership with the Brewers of Indiana Guild and the Indianapolis City Market. They feature nineteen beers on draft, all of which are from Indiana breweries.

While visiting, Hoppy enjoyed the following brews:

Spin To Win: Jackpot from Hoosier Brewing in Greenwood. It is a sour packed with loads of fruit – black currant, blackberries, strawberries and blueberries. Described as thick, tart and a touch sweet. 5% ABV.

BBA Blot Out The Sun (2021) from Three Floyds Brewing in Munster. This is an imperial stout that spends over a year in bourbon barrels and extinguishes all light with notes of chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar and whiskey notes from the barrel aging. “Since the dawn of time it has been mankind’s dream to blot out the sun.” – C. Montgomery Burns. 13.4%; 97 IBU.

Into The Wild Sour: Blueberry Pomegranate from Guggman Haus Brewing in Indianapolis. This fruited sour Berliner Weisse combines tart blueberry tannin notes with background pomegranate sweetness. They use a wild yeast strain for natural souring, and brewed with milk sugars for a creamy, refreshing body. 8% ABV.

Each of these three beers have a 4+ rating on Untappd!

GRAND JUNCTION BREWING – WESTFIELD

GRAND JUNCTION BREWING – WESTFIELD

Grand Junction Brewing in Westfield was Hoppy’s next visit. They opened their doors in April, 2014 and are community focused. Their name is a nod to Westfield’s rich history of the Monon and Midland Railroads that ran through the area as well as the Underground Railroad for which the city is known.

While there, Hoppy enjoyed a A Clockwork Haze, a New England style IPA described as having a rich base of wheat and flaked oats with a heavy dry hopping of Citra, Azacca and Cascade for a dank, smooth citrus flavor. It clocks in at 7.6% ABV; 35 IBU.
