DEVIATE BREWING RELEASE PARTY 5/17/2025 – INDY/CARMEL

Hoppy attended the Deviate Brewing Release Party yesterday for two barrel-aged imperial stouts. While there, he drank a flight including those two stouts and two high octane IPAs. These were the following:

Existential Wreckoning Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple, Cinnamon & Marshmallow Imperial Stout – 13.2% ABV.

Vanilla Wrath of Puh-Kahn Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Pecan Imperial Stout – Described as being aged an additional three months with vanilla beans in the keg, making this delicious treat even more smooth and creamy. 13.3% ABV.

Triple Hop Supremacy Hazy IPA – Described as an amped up version of their Double Hop Supremacy and part of their Hop Duplicity Series showcasing Cryo Citra and Mosaic hops. 10% ABV.

Hop Opulancy Quadruple IPA (2025) – Also a part of their Hop Duplicity Series showcasing Cryo Citra and Mosaic hops. Described as having a delicious malt backbone working in conjunction with the citrus hop notes and delivering a super smooth mouthfeel. 12% ABV.

DARK LORD DAY AT ALE EMPORIUM

DARK LORD DAY AT ALE EMPORIUM

On Wednesday, March 2nd, Ale Emporium had what I am calling their Dark Lord Day. During this event they offered the Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout and five of its variants, from Three Floyds Brewing, on draft: They were as follows:

2019 Dark Lord – A Demonic Russian-Style Imperial Stout Brewed with Coffee, Mexican Vanilla and Indian Sugar.

2021 Marshmallow Handjee – Dark Lord Aged in Bourbon Barrels with Vanilla Beans.

2021 Chemtrailmix – Dark Lord Aged in Rye Barrels with Mekong Cinnamon + Pink Peppercorn.

2020 ‘Rrari Crochet – Dark Lord Aged in Cognac Barrels with Toasted Coconut, Freeze-Dried Strawberries, Cocoa Nibs, and Vanilla Beans.

2020 Keyrock – Dark Lord Aged in Rye Barrels.

2019 Loadstar – Dark Lord Aged in Bourbon and Maple Syrup Boarrels with Toasted Coconut.

For this very special Dark Lord tapping, Hoppy stopped at a phone booth and changed into “Malty” for one day. He found the Stouts to not only be exceptionally flavorful, but unbelievably smooth for brews that were all 15% ABV!

Malty sipped the Dark Lord, Marshmallow Handjee, Chemtrailmix, and Keyrock, avoiding both the ‘Rrari Crochet and Loadstar due to his aversion to coconut. If he was forced to rank them it would probably be Marshmallow Handjee followed by Keyrock, Chemtrailmix and Dark Lord, but all are worthy of their exceptional ratings

Taxman Block Party and Deadline Release

Taxman Block Party and Deadline Release

Hoppy attended the Taxman Block Party and Deadline Release last Saturday, April 17th. This was a miniature version of their Death & Taxes Day Brew Festival, which was canceled last year, and again this year, due to COVID-19. The Party featured Taxman house beers and the various Deadline (formerly Evasion) variants for 2021, and wines from Mallow Run Winery, also from Bargersville. As well as the original Bourbon Barrel, my favorite, the Deadline variants for this year were Toasted Coconut, Peanut Butter Cocoa, Maple Vanilla and Mexican Chocolate Cake. Hey Taxman, how about bringing back the Port Wine Barrel-Aged Version?

You might also enjoy a new release from last month, The Extension, which is a collaboration with Upland Brewing. It begins with Taxman Exemption Tripel, a swaggery Belgian ale with orange zest, coriander and lemon. After primary fermentation in The Upland Wood Shop foedres, it was aged for six months in wood barrels then blended with 1.5 year Upland Basis for a dry and fruit sour ale. I enjoyed it on tap at the Bargersville Taproom.
